My Story: What Came First the Chicken or the Treat?

This all started to happen in 2014 when I got into some of my parents potato chips; ok you got me, not some I ate the whole thing. Shortly after that I started to feel sick.  Over the next two days I grew really sick, I didn’t want to eat and I tried to stay by myself.  I was over at my Grammy’s and she called my parents telling them I wasn’t feeling good.  They did what any parent would do, they came and got me and I stayed with them that night leaving my brother and sister at Grammy’s.

By midnight I started to shake and whine so my mom and dad threw me in the car and took me to the ER.  Come to find out I gave myself pancreatitis from eating those chips.  From that day on my entire diet changed; the problem was that I still demanded my treats. My parents then started to look into low fat foods and special diets.

My dad and mom tell me that it’s very hard to find a quality food for me that has little to no fat let alone treats.  Most dog food has 5 to 7% fat!  It’s full of byproducts and it’s just not good for me.  Finally we found a food that is low fat and I’ve been on that diet ever since.  I still get treats but just a few at a time because they are still high in fat.

2018 – My dad and mom had a horrible weekend with us and it started on a Friday night.  My other sister was starting to throw up and not feel good, and I was sitting on my dad begging mercilessly for a treat.  He gave me a long stick treat, I ate it down as fast as I could then I started to beg for more!  He told me no over and over again but I was persistent.  Finally he gave in and let me have another and that satisfied me, but he didn’t realize that he just made a BIG mistake.

When we got up Saturday I wasn’t myself, neither was my sister.  He took her to the vet and it was not a good prognosis in fact he had to rush her to the ER.  When he came back I was throwing up and I couldn’t stop!  He threw me in the car and he took me to the ER too.  It was another pancreatitis flareup.

The doctor said NO TREATS and forced me onto a very low fat diet.  Dad knows I won’t stand for not having any treats so he asked the vet if he made his own treats would it be OK?  The doctor said yes as long as we don’t add stuff to it like salts and stuff our treats are the best thing he could give me, so that’s what he did. It took me a week or so to get better but I did.

Now he read the ingredients in everything including the treats that sent me to the ER. In those treats was ethylene glycol one of the main ingredients; he was shocked!  The fat content was 14% crude fat!  It was a death stick.  He gave it to me with love not knowing how dangerous it was for me.  So he went into the kitchen and started to make some snacks that were low fat, healthy, and no chemicals added.  I couldn’t believe my tongue they were delicious!  I eat them every night and he’s at rest knowing what he gives me won’t kill me.

I told him that we really need to sell this stuff and he agreed.  That’s how Gladdy’s Goodies came about.
